It was a week of science with Dr. Gina Malczewski from Midland ACS who came to Mrs Richardson’s class to present a lesson on hydrophobic (water-hating) and hydrophilic (water-loving) materials. The nature of those materials and how they are used were discussed, and the students made“instant snow” from a polymer also used in disposable diapers. They tested materials from fabrics to plastics with water to categorize them. In addition, “moon sand” was examined versus regular sand, as an example of how materials may be modified to change their properties—“moon sand” repels water due to a coating of silicone. Students also learned about emulsions that are formed when surfactants are added to make hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials “get along”—they made a simple lotion with oil, water and a Dow silicone surfactant.
Dr. Tracy Zhang from MSU St. Andrews in Midland also came to visit and taught the students about 3d printers and had them design their own keychain that they could keep.

Yesterday Student Leadership hosted Swan Valley Middle School in our 1st Exchange Day! Students part took in activities that promoted them to work tomorrow verbally and non verbally. Students went on a scavenger hunt around the school and created TikToks on what it is to be a leader. Students got to showcase what our classes at FMS consist of and everything we do while even having some karaoke fun at lunch. Lastly, students collaborated at the end to develop fun events they might want to see happen. We can’t wait to visit Swan Valley in April!
Here is a link to all of the photos from the day as there were too many to share in the post: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1IkyPzqb0PrD7JBDoyxR7ljOmanknvXoY?usp=drive_link

FMS is getting caught up today from our SOAR Assembly last Friday. There were so many great pictures celebrating this event taken by 7th grade student Kyle Wheatley that we have to share them in this file: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1em8KAJxyPDj4iO4rKDvNRF4ZNeKdrcqa?usp=sharing
Also, we wanted to give a special shout out to two students who should have received recognition on Friday but were unfortunately missed on our lists. We apologize for this omission and wanted to recognize them on social media.
Congrats to all of our Falcons and let's make semester 2 just as great!

Yesterday FMS had our 1st Semester SOAR Assembly where we celebrated all the good things. Honor Roll, Merit Roll, Students with no tardies and no discipline, and students who showed significant growth on their NWEA tests. We also did our SOAR drawing for students who have collected SOAR slips for their good behavior at school as well as participation in our lunch time activities. We would like to take a moment to thank the group of businesses who have helped to make this possible for our students. Whether it be by financial contribution or by giving us rewards to give to our students, we couldn't do it without them!
More pictures to follow next week of the actual assembly. Another big thank you to the parents who were able to attend to celebrate our students!
