CONGRATULATIONS to the FHS Literary-Art Club, as their magazine, Painting with Ink, has received another FIRST PLACE award from the American Scholastic Press Association for their 2022-2023 issue. Thank you Mrs. Howson for your amazing leadership with this group of students. We are so proud of the artists, writers, editors, and directors who have helped to make the magazine a success once again. For anyone interested in a copy of the award winning issue for $1.00, please contact Mrs. Howson at howsonc@freelandschools.net. We expect our newest issue to be published in May this year, and we cannot wait to share it with you.

The FHS Student Council volunteered at Toys for Tots on Monday helping to make the holidays a little brighter for many children in our area. While they had fun, they also provided some extra community outreach to those in need.

Congratulations to our FHS Festive Sweater winners! First place was Carter Neal, Second Place was Eli Hescott, and Third Place was Wes Trotter.

FHS Students Leading Students spent their time last Saturday helping to wrap Christmas gifts at the City Rescue Mission. Thank you to Mrs. Klida, our SLS Advisor, and to our students who were able to give their time to bring joy to others this holiday season!

FHS students in Mr. Byrne's Engineering II class just completed a unit on electricity and they designed 3D Christmas ornaments that incorporated LED lighting. Their ornaments were very creative as evidenced in the photos. Great work students!

Last week, students in Mrs. Richardson's class had a special guest, Dr. Gina Malczewski, of the Midland Section of the American Chemical Society. She presented a “Chromatography” lesson focusing on mixtures, diffusion and separation with water-soluble and alcohol-soluble pigments. Students tested different color inks on paper to determine their components, and made beautiful art in a Petri dish with M&Ms. Diffusion with sharpie ink was also used by students to make personalized T-shirts.

Earlier this year, kindergarteners in Mrs. Hare and Mrs. Peter's classes drew a monster, and our high school students in Mrs. Keefer's Personal Living class made the monsters come to life by sewing a replica of their buddy's monster. As you can see by the many smiles, delivering the hand sewn monsters this week was so fulfilling for all of our students and it was a great learning experience.

FHS students participated in the Junior Achievement Titan Challenge against other area high schools this week. Congratulations to Adam McNier, Deagan O'Neil, Ethan Howell, Nathan Messing, Katie Papst, Ava Avram, Ally Glover, Grace DeShone, Makayla Staley, and Elizabeth Robins for a great team competition! A special thanks to Mr. Mike Williams from Isabella Bank and to Mrs. Aimar for helping support our students through the competition.

Yesterday, our College and Career Advisor, Michelle Wells, took students from grades 10 - 12 to Healthsource to complete a job shadow and be exposed to different employment opportunities in a healthcare setting. Students shadowed in various fields including nursing, human resources, therapy, and more. We appreciate Mrs. Wells and our partnership with Healthsource for creating opportunities for students to get real world experiences in areas that are of interest to them as they prepare for life after high school.

Mrs. Neal's Physics and Honors Physics classes completed the drop portion of their Eggsplosive Safety Project today. This project focuses on using their knowledge of Newton's Laws to attempt to keep their egg passenger safe in a simulated crash. The project combines real world physics with engineering principles using inquiry and design.

FHS students in the Literary Arts Club were excited to have local artist Nancy Farley teach them a painting lesson. Mrs. Farley graciously donated her time and resources to help our students, and we appreciate and value her expertise! Photo Credits: Brooklyn Laking, 9th grade

Last Friday, 10 students from FHS volunteered to help as mentors in Mrs. Koehler's STEM class at the elementary school. Our high school students are looking forward to mentoring again once every month. Pictured here is Madison Murray with her elementary partners.

As part of their rhetoric unit, students in Mrs. Howson's English 9 Honors class recently learned Aristotle’s Three Appeals, and they used their knowledge of ethos, pathos and logos to build and sell a gingerbread house that they created.

FHS is proud to highlight Mrs. Worth this week!
