FCSD would like to extend a warm welcome to Mr. William Hartzell, our new principal of Freeland High School!
Following Ms. Traci Smith’s retirement announcement in March, FCSD conducted an extensive search to find the next leader of Freeland High School. Mr. Hartzell was selected from a competitive pool of highly qualified applicants, including sitting principals and assistant principals from across the region, and we couldn't be more excited for him to join our team! He brings a wide-ranging background in education with over 20 years of experience, including the last four as the principal of Cass City Jr./Sr. High School, one of the top-performing schools in Michigan’s Thumb region.
Mr. Hartzell’s leadership is grounded in fostering a positive school culture, student-centered innovation, and staff empowerment. He’s led initiatives in AI integration, MTSS implementation, restorative practices, and expanded AP and Honors offerings. Beyond the school walls, he has served as a trustee for the Village of Cass City and is the founder of multiple nonprofit youth sports organizations.
Mr. Hartzell will officially begin his role on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. Welcome to Freeland, Mr. Hartzell!
