During the month of October, Freeland High School, is joining over 300 Michigan High Schools in participating in Michigan College Month.
The goal of Michigan College Month is to give every graduating senior the chance to apply to a university, community college, certificate program or the military and to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Freeland High School, with the help of school and community volunteers, provided dedicated support and time for 130 seniors to complete an application and start the financial aid process on October 16th, 2018. Special efforts were made to reach out to minority and low-income students, as well as those who would be the first in their family to attend college.
In support of College Month, Freeland High School is also hosting a Financial Aid Night on October 29th, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Information on paying for college, the financial aid process and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid workshop will be included. All Freeland Community School District students and their parents/guardians are invited to attend.
According to projected job growth statistics, 70 percent of jobs will require at least some college education by the year 2020. Currently, only 43.7 percent of Michigan residents 25-64 have a post-secondary certificate or college degree. Freeland High School is committed to ensuring that ALL of our students have the opportunity to attend college. As part of our commitment to promoting a college going culture, ALL high school students (grades 9-12) were included in this week’s activities geared around post-secondary education. Staff posted college logos on their classroom doors, discussed why post-secondary education was important, shared their college journey with students and asked college trivia questions. College fights songs were also played and college apparel and college hat days were hosted.
