Ms. Ruffertshofer's 8th grade English class was recently asked to reflect, in writing, their thoughts on the start of the school year and reflect on memories from the past. One student, Makayla Cook, had a beautiful response to how this school year comes with so many emotions, and how our students at FMS are making sure to make the best out of difficult circumstances. We were so impressed by her writing that we decided it needed to be shared out to our families. Enjoy!

In the past, school was different. After each class period the students would gather in the halls, seeing each other’s smiles and being able to hear them clearly. 4 minutes was all we had, but we made the best of it. Now with this covid virus, the students' faces turned to a sad display, as we can no longer see our friends. We do not switch classes. We can’t gather in our own small friend groups and talk about our days. Some were devastated by this virus. Not room 83! We were delighted by each other's presence. “Quite talkative,” some teachers may say as they leave the classroom. But we never failed to get through the day, as everybody is really trying their best. Laughing and having fun in this classroom, is slowly bringing back what school should be like. The original school day memories. It is very unlikely that we will have a sad day. Bringing back these old memories of laughter, is better than hearing the sad muffling surrounding you, under these masks. You can see the smile, just not through their mouth; but through the students’ eyes.
